Homestead Besu

One public record. One private note.

Four computers keep the same public chain. Alice and Bob also share a private number. Carol, and anyone looking at the public chain, does not.

Waiting

Four validators take turns. The dark one wrote the newest block.

Block

…

  1. Validator 1…
  2. Validator 2…
  3. Validator 3…
  4. Validator 4…

Waiting for the chain.

Everyone sees this.

What 424242 is

It is a made-up number stored in a tiny private contract. Treat it as a private amount, the way a balance or a payment figure would be private. The contract does nothing else.

A real payment contract would hide its amounts the same way. Members can read them. Everyone else sees a public receipt with the amount left out. This one number is enough to show that split.

The whole contract
contract Store {
    uint256 public value;
    constructor(uint256 initial) {
        value = initial; // 424242
    }
}
